Why I Chose My Major: Exercise Science

About Baili
Baili Deaver is a junior at Hardin-Simmons University who grew up in the small town of Tolar, Texas, located in the central region of the state.
She is an active member of the HSU community, serving as a tutor for the ACE Tutoring Program. There, she helps students develop a deeper understanding of the subjects she is passionate about.
From 2022 to 2024, Baili was also a member of the HSU women’s basketball team, helping lead the team to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16—the first appearance in school history.
The opportunity to play basketball at the collegiate level while pursuing a career in physical therapy ultimately led her to call HSU home.
Growing up, Baili watched her mom work as an occupational therapist and witnessed the impact therapy had on individuals in need. She also observed her grandfather’s health decline, which further inspired her to help others through pediatric physical therapy.
“Seeing my grandpa’s health take a turn for the worse lit a fire to learn as much as possible to help people like him in the future,” she said.
Exercise Science at HSU
As a student in the exercise science program, Baili has thrived in an environment that supports her learning style.
“HSU has provided the best kind of learning environment for my learning style. They encourage students to ask questions, actively engage in class, and offer opportunities to get extra help,” Baili shared.
She credited Dr. Ruot and Dr. Spindler with having a major impact on her academic journey, noting that they continually challenge her to understand complex concepts—skills that will set her apart as she pursues a career in pediatric physical therapy.
Future Aspirations
Baili’s career goal is to become a pediatric physical therapist and eventually open her own clinic, where she can support children with therapeutic needs.
She also hopes to be remembered for her Christian faith and the way she represents Christ.
“If I could pick one thing in the entire world, it would be to be remembered for my faith,” she said. “I want the love of Christ to absolutely radiate off me so people will be more drawn to Him.”
Advice to Exercise Science Majors
Baili offered this advice to current and future exercise science majors: take time to truly understand the concepts, as many of them build on one another.
“Do not be afraid of the extra work! If you work hard to truly understand what you’re learning rather than simply memorizing it, you’ll be setting yourself up for success in the long run. Making sure you have a deep understanding in one class will be helpful in other classes down the road,” she said.
