The Hardin-Simmons Office of Career Services will host a Student Etiquette Dinner on Thursday, November 9. The dinner will be held in the Johnson Building Multipurpose Room from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. The event will consist of a free, six-course meal open to all students and friends.

The dinner will be an interactive event, focused on helping students build practical skills for the professional world. Kathy Diamond, Catering Director of Aramark HSU, will be speaking at the event. Diamond will give a step-by-step introduction to etiquette, focusing particularly on etiquette in a professional setting.

Diamond said, “People have gotten out of the habit of dining in a restaurant. It’s essentially part of the business interview. This course teaches students how to interact with others, how to keep the conversation going, and how to deal with others.”

Wendy Smith, Director of Career Services, encourages all students to attend. Smith said, “This dinner provides tips that are important to understand for the real world.” She continued, “It is a great refresher even for those who have attended before.”

Etiquette is not only a necessity in one’s personal life, but in the professional world as well. Jessica Peña, Career Services Coordinator, said, “Learning etiquette is important for your career because it allows you to focus on conversation, instead of on which fork to use.”

In modern business, many meetings and interviews are conducted in a restaurant setting. This evening simply provides students with the tools for how to handle themselves in such a scenario.

There are only 125 spaces available for the Student Etiquette Dinner. Because of this, students must RSVP by November 7 if they wish to attend. Smith encouraged students to register early, because spaces will go fast. “This is an incredible opportunity,” Smith said. “You don’t want to miss it.”
