Celebrating Father’s Day

June 15, 2023 Charis Ochu

On Father’s Day, we recognize the men who have raised us, impacted us, and loved us. Fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and more have had a hand in the development of countless others. At Hardin-Simmons University, we recognize faculty and staff who act as surrogate father figures and mentors to students far from home. We reached out to students to share a few words about their campus mentors, and here’s what they had to say.

Sophomore Nicole Travers shared, “Dr. Terry Sergeant, my professor and advisor, has been very supportive in various ways. I had to go home when my dad passed away. When I returned, he was very understanding in terms of catching up with his class and others. As a person, he is very compassionate, caring, and considerate, which I admire greatly.”

Sophomore Esteban Rodriguez said, “Dr. Cook has been a great mentor at HSU. His continuous support of my curiosity has exponentially increased my desire to learn more. He always makes time to talk about ideas which makes me excited for the vast opportunities ahead. He is not only an amazing professor, but a great person as well.”

Senior Andrea Ashburn shared, “Rode Owen is not only an amazing father to his sons but an amazing mentor to students at Hardin-Simmons as well. He truly cares about his work and every student he encounters. He always encourages me and is a light to those around him. He has the biggest heart and is truly an incredible man. I am blessed to know him, his wife, and his sons. He deserves the best Father’s Day, and I am grateful to have him as the dad of HSU!”
