December Graduation Spotlight: Mark Denison
From an early age, Mark Denison’s love for sports was evident. Determined to turn that passion into a career, he enrolled at Hardin-Simmons University (HSU), choosing to major in Fitness, Recreation, and Sports Management, laying a solid foundation for his future in what he thought would be coaching.
However, as Mark progressed through his time at HSU, his aspirations began to evolve. Through hands-on experiences and exposure to the inner workings of collegiate athletics, he discovered a deep interest in sports information and administration. The dynamic changes in college sports, such as the rise of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and conference realignment, expanded his perspective and he found his eyes opened to a new career path in sports information and administration.
Hailing from Colorado City, Texas, Mark was drawn to HSU for the close-knit family atmosphere.
“Coming from a high school where I had 18 including myself in my graduating class, I knew what I was comfortable with,” said Mark. “However, over the last four years getting to meet the faculty and staff on a name-by-name basis has been awesome. It allowed me to feel at home and helped me learn not only in the classroom but in my faith.”
During his time at HSU, Mark worked as a Sports Information Student Worker and interned at the 2024 Big 12 Baseball Championship Tournament and the 2024 D3 Softball Championship. He claims being named ASC Academic All-Conference every year as one of the educational accomplishments he is most proud of, and he expressed getting to be in the athletic department while experiencing so much success on the fields and courts as a “blast.”
Mark credits Chad Grubbs, director of athletic communication, as the person who played a pivotal role in his journey at HSU.
“He helped me see ways to grow as a person and in the line of work. He opened my eyes to the sports information path and helped me discover that pathway. Chad taught me so much about the career and how to promote the student-athletes and make a difference. He also has helped me open myself up and grow. To try new things and most importantly always try to see the best in every situation.” said Mark.
Upon graduation, Mark plans to attend graduate school at HSU and hopes in five years to be working in a collegiate athletic department while making a lasting impact on student-athletes.
Reflecting on his journey, Mark offers advice to others:
“Enjoy every moment of this experience and not take anything for granted. Find your routine for studying what works best for you,” said Mark. “Make time for yourself and meet others. Also, call your parents they miss you.”
Congratulations, Mark!
