Experience Shakespeare’s Classic Tragedy with HSU Theatre!

Hardin-Simmons University proudly presents its upcoming production of Macbeth, marking the university’s first Shakespearean play since 2016. Directed by HSU professor Dr. Victoria Spangler, this classic tale of ambition and betrayal promises a fresh yet authentic take on Shakespeare’s work.

Dr. Spangler, who had originally planned to direct Comedy of Errors in 2020 before the pandemic canceled the production, felt the time was right for HSU to return to Shakespeare. The inspiration for Macbeth grew from the theatre department’s recent visit to Scotland, making this production deeply personal and rooted in its historical setting.

Rather than take a modern spin on Macbeth, Dr. Spangler wants to create a traditional production set in a tribal/medieval era Scotland. “For this production,” Dr. Spangler shared, “I want to tap into Scotland’s wilderness: The organic, the rough, and the wild.” The show will incorporate both natural elements and traditional Celtic elements for the play’s aesthetics.

The play will be a trimmed-down production lasting about 80 minutes. “Macbeth is all about action,” Dr. Spangler explained, “so we wanted to streamline it for modern audiences.”

Macbeth will run from November 14th to November 17th at the Van Ellis Theatre. Don’t miss this unique production of Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy!
