(Abilene, TX)–Hardin-Simmons has always encouraged faculty and students to be part of a caring, warm-hearted family. It is essential that the school provides scholars with examples of taking and applying the values they learn not only inside the campus but also to the Abilene community. This Thursday, HSU joined with the Hendrick Regional Blood Center to organize a blood drive dedicated for helping the patients.

All students and faculty were invited to donate. To help motivate the people, HSU announced a crosstown showdown competition for blood donations against local McMurry University. Since both schools are competing at a basketball encounter, they will announce the winner at the half time of the game on Saturday. Hendrick Center ensures that the real winners are the patients whose lives are saved by receiving the donations.

“Usually, every year Hardin-Simmons and McMurry will have a competition, or we will just come here twice a year,” explained Didi Best, a nurse with Hendrick Blood Center.

Two big buses were set up in front of Behrens Auditorium and inside the nurses were taking care of the blood extractions. Even though it is a competition and the number of people that donated cannot be revealed, Best said that students and professors showed their interest in participating with the blood drive.

“The professors and students seem committed to helping the students regarding the competition. Hardin-Simmons has always been really good at reminding the community to be part of this,” said Best.

HSU has been partnering with the Hendrick Center for bringing the bloodmobile for 11 years. Helping the community is as important as being part of it. Abilene patients count on this blood drive to save their lives, and there is nothing better than being part of it while having the feeling of helping others.

HSU did beat McMurry in this competition, but the real winners are all the patients who will use this blood in the coming months.
