HSU hosts TxCCDN Regional Poverty Conference
(ABILENE, Texas)–On April 2, Hardin-Simmons hosted a conference revolving around working to change big issues like poverty and homelessness. The conference was organized by Texas Christian Community Development Network (TxCCDN), Community Foundation of Abilene, Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church of Abilene. The conference’s title was “Community Transformed: Creating Change Through Collaboration” and its purpose was to “collaborate with like-minded leaders to discuss serving our neighbors in need through ministry.”
The conference was held in Logsdon Chapel on the Hardin-Simmons campus. Four presentations were made by leaders from around Texas that are working to combat poverty and other issues like it that are impacting people everywhere.
Dametra Stevenson and Darrel Auvenshine from True Faith Community and Southside City Church in Forth Worth, Larry James from City Square in Dallas, and Scott Sheppard from 6 Stones in Bedford all presented for the attendees. True Faith Community, City Square, and 6 Stones are all organizations that strive to help people in the surrounding community, whether that be with homelessness, financial instability, or other obstacles people face.
True Faith Community serves to “provide a safe, supportive environment for men and women who are in need of healing while utilizing Biblical principles and discipleship.” Their goal is to be a place of comfort and celebration of faith for the Forth Worth community.
City Square is an organization that works to “fight the causes and effects of poverty through service, advocacy and friendship.” They are striving to completely eliminate poverty in the city of Dallas.
6 Stones is “a coalition to transform lives, homes and our community”, that is based in Bedford but also serves the mid-cities of Hurst, Euless, and Grapevine.
HSU was glad to welcome these leaders to discuss their work and passions, and inspire everyone who attended.
