Students, faculty, and staff of Hardin-Simmons University joined together on April 13, 2023, to serve the community in various locations. The day was called Serve Like Simmons to remember the impact Dr. James B. Simmons had on the Abilene community and beyond and emulate his work.

“Our desire was to serve our community and give students, staff, faculty, and alumni a chance to connect and serve alongside each other. We also wanted to give students an annual opportunity to serve our community,” said Isaac Cervantes, a Student Success Coach with Student Life, who was heavily involved in making Serve Like Simmons happen.
The group of 55 served at the Food Bank of West Texas, Big Brothers Big Sisters Abilene, the Salvation Army, and Boots on the Ground, all to serve the community of Abilene.
“I chose to volunteer to make an impact on the community and be a part of doing good,” commented senior student Jesuye Olabisi.
Olabisi helped at the West Texas Food Bank sorting food from boxes.

“As Christians, we are called to a life of service. Volunteering is a way for us to love others as Christ first loved us,” Cervantes stated. “Volunteering is also a great way for students to connect with organizations in our community. There are so many great places in Abilene to serve.”
Brendan Cisneros volunteered with the HSU men’s soccer team. He assisted in cleaning the Salvation Army’s kitchen.
“I think it’s important for students to volunteer because you go to school to better yourself, and by helping your community, you get to be blessed in return.” Cisneros added, “It’s important to return the blessings God has given you.”
Serve Like Simmons is planned to be an annual event.
Cervantes explained that the name Serve Like Simmons “aligns with the heart of Hadin-Simmons Univeristy and its desire to be a mission-minded institution.”
