Spurs Earn Bid to National Competition
While summer is a time for many people to relax, for the HSU Spurs Dance Team, it is the time to get into gear. The Spurs gathered for camp from July 1-4 to practice choreography for the 2019-20 season and prepare for the National Dance Association competition in Daytona, Florida.
During the camp, the girls learned the routine from the choreographer of the Washburn Dance Team who won first place in their division at nationals last year. They performed the routine, earning the team a bid at the national competition in April.
“I’m really proud of the girls,” said Bailey LeRoux, head coach for the dance and spirit program. “They put in a lot of work this week.”
Although the team only had to earn a score of 40 out of 55 to receive a bid for nationals, they earned a 51.
The camp was an opportunity for the girls to get to know the incoming freshmen and bond as a team. The new members learned the fight song and other Spurs essentials.
The Spurs have attended the American Dance and Drill Team national competition in Denton, but this will be their first year to compete in Florida. To do that, they will need to do fundraising through T-shirt sales and hosting the Spurs Junior Camp.
The camp is for elementary and middle school girls to learn dance and drill routines and skills with the HSU Spurs. All participants will perform at halftime during the Cowboy’s football game. To sign your child up for the Sept. 14 camp, click here.
The Spurs are also hosting recruit clinics in the spring for the high school students. Senior students wanting to try out for the Spurs will be eligible to receive fast passes to skip April auditions. Participants will cheer and dance at a women’s basketball game and perform a showcase. To sign up, click here.
