Summer Internship Spotlight: Jaden Hubbard

June 15, 2023 Charis Ochu

Classes may be out for summer vacation, but that doesn’t mean Hardin-Simmons students aren’t hard at work, sharpening their skills in their respective job fields and courses of study. This summer, we’ll feature students who are interning, volunteering, or working around the world. If there is a student you think we should feature, reach out to marketing@hsutx.edu!

Name: Jaden Hubbard

Hometown: Refugio, Texas

Major: Social Work Administration

Internships: Jaden has two internships. First, he is a Mobile Assessor with the West Texas Homeless Network. In this role, Jaden provides assessments to our neighbors without homes to help them get into housing and involved with other assistive programs. Additionally, he oversees the crisis hotline and participates in outreach, which involves going into different encampments to provide resources for those in need.

For his second internship, Jaden will be a youth director at First Global Methodist Church. In this role, Jaden will work with youth, accompanying them to church camp while also managing a budget for a mission trip.

How has HSU played a role in getting you here: HSU has given me the motivation and ability to strive for greatness. Although there have been bumps in the road, HSU has prepared me for the future through the relationships I built with my classmates, faculty, and staff. Abilene has helped me as well through the community partners and resources offered to me.

Most impactful mentors at HSU: HSU faculty Melissa Milliorn (retired) and Dr. Lauren Cantrell have contributed so much to my success. They care about each student that crosses their path. The social work program is like a family because they are always looking out for us.

What made you choose to take part in these internships, and how will they prepare you for the future: I was looking for a productive way to use my time during the summer. Last year, I contributed to First Global Methodist Church, and they asked me to return this summer. I was also opportune to be interviewed by the West Texas Homeless Network for my field placement and was offered this summer internship right after. I felt this was an opportunity that I could not ignore because it would help me to get a macro perspective of the social work world.
