In the past months, Hardin-Simmons University has continued the development of its partnership with the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). Three reverends from the PCEA flew to Abilene to attend a special luncheon and meetings with several campus departments on Oct. 15 and 16.
On Oct. 29, Dr. Jeffrey Cottrell, Associate Professor of Low Brass and Theory, directed the 12th annual Oktubafest at Hardin-Simmons’ Woodward-Dellis Recital Hall. Performers included students, faculty, and the Civic Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble of Abilene. With a variety of musical styles ranging from serious music to jazz, artists were able to shine a light on the talents of the low brass instruments.
After returning from HSU’s Physician Assistant mission trip in May, artist Michael Wurman created seven drawings depicting the trip to the Dominican Republic, plus two pieces depicting Abilene landscapes. Wurman donated the pieces to decorate HSU’s newly renovated Physician Assistant space in Mabee Hall, where his daughter is currently enrolled.
HSU students from the Cowboy Band and Dr. Tim Chandler’s COMM1301 classes volunteered at two H-E-B Feast of Sharing events in Fort Worth and Abilene.
On Feb. 1, the Hardin-Simmons University School of Music Foundation will host Julia Tucker in concert. Tucker is a doctoral candidate at Arizona State University, studying organ performance. She will perform a variety of pieces at First Baptist Church of Abilene at 4 p.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining hall.
Every spring, the Hardin-Simmons Social Work Club hosts its annual “Prom Party” by welcoming Abilene foster youth to campus for a day to pick out a prom dress and learn about life at HSU.
