Range Rider
O ur parents, Roy C. Fuller and Mary Gertrude Story, married in October, 1923. Daddy was a salesman for Radford, one of Abilene’s two wholesale grocery companies. Mother had taught school for several years following two years of study at her beloved Simmons College. From the beginning, they knew that they wanted a number of children and that they wanted to provide a loving, Christian family life. They also felt deeply that they wanted all their children to graduate from (what would become) Hardin Simmons University. Sister Aletha was 2 ½ when I was born in March, 1927. By this time, the folks were beginning to have concerns that Daddy’s limited formal education might preclude his earning enough to pay for their children’s college. He had dropped out of school in the ninth grade to help on the family farm. The other problem was that our home was on the south side of Abilene, some three miles from Hardin Simmons.
